Car traffic increases all over the world. New streets are constructed, existing ones widened. Yet there are streets that don’t follow this trend, like the narrowest street in the world.
The Guinness Book of Records lists the Spreuerhofstraße in the German City of Reutlingen as the world‘s narrowest street. It is just 31cm wide.
Not sure if I would fit through. Should you ever visit Reutlingen, you can try yourself. If you are successful, you even get a certificate!
The Narrowest Traffic Light
Not the narrowest street in the world, but still a specialty: There is a street in Prague that is so long and narrow that it is necessary to regulate bidirectional pedestrian traffic with a traffic light at each end. It has become quite a tourist attraction. See TripAdvisor for more details.
Even though I would like streets to take up less space in our cities, we should not take these streets as the best examples of urban planning 😅
